Not very FOND of this disorder
I read endless novels and nap like a seal on my beach towel for hours. I create summer playlists, enjoy afternoon cocktails and sunset bbq’s with friends. September rolls around, and suddenly all time must be spent being productive. Rushing around preparing for a short work week because I had a trip with my college friends, I got sick. Forced to rest, I read the pile of magazines that had accumulated on my coffee table and learned about FOND.
Fear-of-Not-Doing (FOND) is when you feel guilty for spending free time not being productive. Growing up we prided ourselves on a “Colbert weekend.” Cramming in as many activities and projects as you could, success would occur when you rolled into Monday exhausted. You can read the article here, but reframing your attitude about your time is the solution. Confronting your fear will help control it. Look at a nap like it’s helpful to recharge for the next day. Flip through a magazine for inspiration. It is going to take patience but lowering my expectations for all that I can get done each day is the first step. I am all for conquering a napping practice!
Speaking of reframing, it’s no secret that I use podcasts to shift my perspective. After hearing Kate Bowler speak at the Nantucket Project, I got into her podcast: Everything Happens For a Reason. I have found good nuggets after each episode and her book is on my list to read.
My children’s book character Nellie has to learn how to get out of her own head and share her swirling thoughts. I’ve been getting out of my own head with Fleabag (Amazon) and Schitt’s Creek (the final season is now up on Netflix). Both have funny characters that are a great distraction from my own drama!
My favorite piece of clothing these days are my tuxedo-striped Athleta jeans. With just enough stretch, they help for the days when you need an extra spring in your step but you feel like a pumpkin.
What is own my shelf this month? I often share what I am reading on my socials to get a sneak peak into what friends are reading. I love watching the comments and connections that grow over a book discussion. Plus, you can learn a lot about how someone spends their free time. See my Readtober list below and keep the recommendations coming!
I love visiting friends for the quality time as well as the helpful tips you can take home with you. Staying at Elizabeth’s beautiful Nantucket home home last month was magical. A very talented designer, every last detail is done to perfection. What have I adopted in my own home? Copying her set-up for washing dishes. Not more soggy towels on my counters thanks to this rack!
Get in touch! If you there is something that has made you a little bit happier, drop me a line so I can pass it along.
xoxo,
