Our Menomoon in Brooklyn
Thanks to early menopause, I have been bringing a lot of extra personalities into our daily lives. Teenagers and busy schedules make it harder for Todd and I to connect, so he suggested we escape for a 2-night Menomoon. Why should newlyweds and pregnant moms have all the fun with honeymoons and babymoons? Sharing the details in case you are in need for a lil’ escape.
STAY: As soon as we checked into the 1 Hotel Brooklyn, the universe spoke to us. I had just shared my glee over purchasing “casket pants” at Lou & Grey, and they had a pop-up shop in the lobby! I bought another pair of their sweatpants since they are so crazy soft I plan to be buried in them. I swooned over everything in this hotel. The decor is outstanding, the service impeccable, the smells and their special touches make it an experience. I was glad I brought my water bottle since we had a filtered spigot in our room!
BEET MOJITO’S!
We rode in the 1 Hotel’s complimentary Tesla to Sugar Cane Raw Bar & Grill on Kristin’s recommendation. The mix of Cuban and rap music had us moving in our seats as we sipped Beet Mojitos. The music reminded me of my fav soundtracks: Chef & Dance with Me. The manager Lamar treated us like royalty and he blew our minds with the Nutella & banana ice cream sundae!
EAT: We kicked off Friday with a yummy breakfast at Butler Bake Shop, then hit the hotel gym for a workout. We got to chatting with the onsite trainer Ashley Levesque as she offered to hit my sore legs with her Theragun. We talked books she is deep into Own the Movement and following Carl Lentz and Hillsong. But her best tip was telling us to come to the yoga studio Saturday for a HIIT class by Evan Betts. More on that later. We took the subway to the World Trade Center, shopped at Oculus and viewed the 9/11 Memorial. The hotel is so close to the Brooklyn Bridge subway it made it very easy to get around. We hit Harriet’s Rooftop Bar and enjoyed local Kings County Beer (‘course I feel in love based on the illustrated can). On Kate’s recommendation, we hit Gran Electrica for tacos and margaritas.
EXPLORE: After dinner, we took the subway to Times Sq. to see Prom the Musical! Such a creative multigenerational musical about coming out at Prom!
EXERCISE: On @ashleyalavesque’s suggestion, we took an energizing HIIT class by @evanfitness_nyc. We had so much taking this class, made some new friends and left with samples of a high-protein, low-sugar coffee drink by @drinkcoffee!. We checked out, grabbed smoothies at Neighborhood Cafe (and a warm honey-glazed donut for Todd) and were on the road. Perfect stop mid-trip was in Westport to check out Terrain. Thanks Jill & John for sending us, and for Melissa to suggesting we grab wraps at the Granola Bar! We left with lanterns and candles to try our own DIY project inspired by the lighting we saw at the 1 Hotel and inside Osprey (which we walked by each time we entered). I will share that project when we complete, but it might take a few months to hang since we need hooks.-)
A few things items that added joy to our trip.
I refer to my “Casket Pants” by Lou & Grey , but they call them “signature soft plush sweatpants” and you can buy them online.
My curling wand has been helpful on many trips to refresh my curls (thanks Chrissy).
We used the ParkWhiz parking app but then scored street parking last minute.
